La Maddalena: sea, granite and island life
La Maddalena is the main island of the archipelago of the same name and is part of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, the first national park in Sardinia. It’s a destination made of clear waters, jagged coastlines, granite, Mediterranean scrub and small landing places that tell the maritime history of the island.
The town centre develops around the harbour and keeps an intimate scale: walking between Cala Gavetta, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Umberto I and the streets of the centre is one of the best ways to start getting to know the island.
Beaches and places to see
Among the best-known spots on the island are Punta Tegge, Cala Francese and Nido d’Aquila. Cala Francese is also linked to the history of the granite quarries, while Punta Tegge is one of the most characteristic areas for those looking for sea, rocks and sunsets.
From La Maddalena you can also reach Caprera, connected by a bridge, where you’ll find nature areas, trails and places of great historical and environmental value. For the smaller islands of the archipelago — such as Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli — the most common option is to join an authorised boat tour.

How to get to La Maddalena from Olbia and the Costa Smeralda
La Maddalena has no airport: to reach the island you have to get to Palau and then take the ferry. The National Park indicates Palau as the necessary embarkation point to reach La Maddalena.
From Olbia, you reach Palau by car, taxi, private transfer or bus. Olbia-Costa Smeralda airport is about 50 km from La Maddalena including the ferry crossing; without a car, the airport–La Maddalena journey takes around 2 hours and a half, according to bus and ferry connection estimates.
From the Costa Smeralda the route is similar: you reach Palau and from there you board for La Maddalena. The Palau–La Maddalena crossing takes about 15-20 minutes and can also be made with cars, motorbikes or campers.
